The Future of the Firm

OpenAI, Wednesday, October 28th, 2026

An OpenAI Intelligence Age essay sketches three ways AI may enter the org chart: beneath, beside and between human workers.

In this essay from OpenAI's Intelligence Age series, which the authors say reflects their own views, Hemanth Asirvatham and Elliott Mokski describe three ways firms may reorganize around AI.

In the first, every worker gets AI labor beneath them and becomes a manager; in the second, AI teams work beside humans for existing managers; and in the third, AI sits between executives and staff as an always-on consultancy.

They argue that more capable AI is easier to adopt because it onboards itself like labor.

They then weigh whether firms will have less red tape, whether workers will gain agency, whether firms will shrink or grow, and whether pay gaps will widen or compress.
