AlpineBSD Announced: An AI-Free FOSS OS

The Register, Friday, October 30th, 2026

AlpineBSD, a new OS pairing the NetBSD kernel with an Alpine Linux-inspired userland, aims to avoid any AI-generated code.

AlpineBSD barely exists yet: there is no installation media, though a manual bootstrap is possible.

It already has an AI policy under which any software whose code, documentation or binaries include output from a generative AI tool is considered tainted.

The plan is to combine NetBSD's kernel with a userspace inspired by Alpine Linux, to use as little AI-generated software as possible.

The Register notes NetBSD's commit guidelines presume LLM-generated code is tainted, that Linus Torvalds said in July that Linux is not an anti-AI project, and that NetBSD has seen a spike in donations and interest since.
