AWS Lambda Supports Seekable OCI (SOCI) Lazy Loading for Lambda Managed Instances

AWS, Wednesday, October 28th, 2026

AWS Lambda Managed Instances now supports SOCI lazy loading of container images, cutting container startup times by up to 70%.

Lambda now supports Seekable OCI (SOCI) lazy loading for Event Functions packaged as OCI images on Lambda Managed Instances.

Lambda fetches only the files needed at each startup stage instead of downloading the whole image, reducing startup times by up to 70%, which helps compute-heavy workloads whose images reach several gigabytes.

Developers create a SOCI index, push it to Amazon ECR, set the function's image URI to the SOCI-indexed tag and publish a version, and Lambda detects the index automatically.

The feature is available in all commercial regions where Lambda Managed Instances is offered.
