Your AI Agents Have Audit Logs. Can You Reconstruct Their Decisions?

CIO, Wednesday, October 28th, 2026

Standard audit logs show that AI agents acted, not why, so enterprises need records that let them reconstruct agent decisions.

In this CIO.com opinion piece, Maman Ibrahim argues that audit logs capture events rather than decisions, and AI agents break the assumptions that made conventional logging sufficient because their outputs vary, decisions span many steps and authority is spread across agents.

He frames reconstruction as a records and governance problem, relevant to EU AI Act requirements, built on four elements: knowledge, basis, authority and consequence.

He recommends running a reconstruction drill on a recent agent decision, tiering decisions by consequence, and protecting records with appropriate retention, tamper evidence and separate storage.
