Python Jettisons the Native JIT, at Least for Now
InfoWorld, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026
CPython's experimental JIT compiler will be removed after PEP 836 was withdrawn, having failed to satisfy the Python Steering Council.
InfoWorld reports that the experimental just-in-time compiler for CPython will be removed after its maintainers missed deadlines set by the Python Steering Council.
The council paused JIT work in June 2026 pending a PEP explaining how it would be supported, evaluated and integrated with debugging and profiling tools, and found PEP 836 lacking and overly optimistic about performance gains, which were measurable but small.
Savannah Ostrowski withdrew the PEP on October 19, citing limited bandwidth.
JIT work could continue outside mainline CPython, while alternatives include PyPy and Meta's experimental CinderX.
