NIST Details How to Prepare for Post-Quantum Cryptography
HPCWire, Thursday, October 29th, 2026
NIST report IR 8547 sets out which algorithms are quantum-vulnerable and how and when to move to post-quantum cryptography.
HPCwire reports that NIST released Transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography Standards (NIST IR 8547) on October 27, building on its 2024 standards FIPS 203, 204 and 205.
The report identifies quantum-vulnerable algorithms and gives direction on what to replace and when.
Federal high-value systems now face deadlines of 2030 for key establishment and 2031 for digital signatures under Executive Order 14412, ahead of the wider 2035 target, which may also affect federal suppliers.
NIST's Dustin Moody advises starting with long-lived sensitive data and FIPS 203, considering the whole cryptographic supply chain and hybrid approaches, and building crypto-agility through NCCoE work.
