Data Backup and Recovery: Backup vs. Replication and When to Use Both
Veeam, Wednesday, October 28th, 2026
Veeam explains the difference between backup and replication, how to tier workloads and why restore testing proves recoverability.
This Veeam blog post by Dylan Sams explains backup as a retained point-in-time copy and replication as a standby copy that can be switched to without a restore, noting that replicas carry deletion and encryption events forward.
It defines recovery in terms of RTO and RPO, covers full, incremental, differential and synthetic full backups, and recommends tiering workloads by tolerance for data loss and downtime, with Tier 1 systems needing both replication and backup.
It argues a completed backup job does not prove recoverability, so restore testing, clean-point identification, immutability and malware scanning are needed.
The post closes by describing how Veeam Data Platform addresses these needs.
