Are Passkeys More Secure Than Passwords?

TechRadar, Monday, October 26th, 2026

TechRadar explains why passkeys beat passwords against phishing and remote attacks, and where device access and platform lock-in still pose risks.

TechRadar security writer Mark Gill explains how passkeys replace passwords with a public key held by the website and a private key kept on the user's device, so there is nothing for remote attackers or phishing pages to steal.

Fingerprint or face data used to unlock a passkey stays on the device and is not shared with Apple, Google or Microsoft.

The main risks shift to physical access to an unlocked device and to lock-in with ecosystems such as iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, which can make switching platforms difficult.

The article concludes that passkeys are worth adopting as an upgrade, combined with device updates and screen locks.
