AI Isn't Replacing Thinking; It's Changing Where We Need to Think

Qlik's James Fisher argues AI shifts work from producing answers to verifying them, making data quality, governance and judgment key.

In a TechRadar Pro opinion piece, James Fisher, chief strategy officer at Qlik, says AI saves time on tasks like drafting and note-taking but moves the cognitive burden from production to verification.

Polished, confident outputs can hide missing context, so discernment becomes a core workplace skill, though individual vigilance does not scale, especially with agentic AI acting on real processes.

He argues the differentiator will be data quality, governance and operational discipline rather than the model, citing figures that 41 percent of frontline AI users report higher cognitive load.

Governance should answer who owns AI-assisted decisions and can also lower running costs.
