What Is an AI Worm?

Barracuda Networks, Tuesday, October 27th, 2026

Barracuda explains AI worms, self-replicating malware that uses AI to find weaknesses and adapt as it spreads.

The Barracuda Networks blog describes an AI worm as self-replicating malware that uses AI to adapt as it spreads.

Unlike traditional worms such as the 1988 Morris Worm, which exploit one known vulnerability, an AI worm can scan endpoints, identify different weaknesses, and develop exploits on its own, potentially running on open-weight models using compute from compromised machines.

Such worms may operate without command-and-control traffic, making them harder to detect.

The author notes no true AI worm has been seen in the wild yet, and recommends near-real-time patching and zero-trust microsegmentation to limit entry points and lateral movement.
