Your Frontline Workers Have a Workaround for That MFA Prompt

Help Net Security, Tuesday, October 20th, 2026

95% of IT leaders see frontline workers bypassing slow logins by sharing credentials or staying signed in; 62% saw recovery abuse attempts.

A Sapio Research survey of 700 IT and security decision-makers found 95% had seen healthcare and manufacturing frontline workers use workarounds in the past year, such as staying signed in, sharing credentials or bypassing MFA, breaking the link between account and person.

Respondents estimate 37% of frontline workers hit an authentication problem each month, losing about 2.5 hours.

Sixty-two percent reported confirmed or suspected abuse of account recovery or resets, 28% confirmed.

Verification at recovery varies widely, 48% fear AI-enabled impersonation, and passkeys are used at only 28% of organizations, nearly half alongside passwords.
