How Dependency Mocking Affects CI/CD Pipeline Reliability

DevOps.com, Thursday, October 22nd, 2026

Stale dependency mocks make green CI/CD runs misleading; tie upstream deployments to automatic downstream mock validation.

A pipeline can be operationally reliable yet informationally misleading, passing tests against mocks that no longer match upstream services.

Each upstream deployment is a potential accuracy event, so ten services deploying weekly create forty or more a month, and flake rate or completion metrics never show the drift.

The real failure is not a red build but a trusted green one.

The author recommends triggering mock validation from upstream deployments, using observation-based mock generation such as Keploy's eBPF traffic capture to review diffs, and tracking production failures in integrations that tests claimed to cover.
