Developers Use the Platform. Why Aren't They Contributing to It?

PlatformEngineering.com, Monday, October 19th, 2026

Users without contributors can mean a platform is working; give clear extension points, visible roadmaps and funded maintenance.

A platform gaining users without contributors may simply be solving their needs, argues Honeycomb engineer Quail Lincoln; the warning sign is developers bending their work to fit platform limits.

To encourage contributions, platform teams should publish a visible roadmap of wanted improvements, define supported extension interfaces with telemetry so contributors can judge results, and provide feedback channels that separate small fixes from larger roadmap requests.

Governance with predictable review commitments keeps quality and security intact, and contributed features need a named owner and a maintenance budget so they do not become long-term liabilities.
