AI-Era Cyberattacks: What Companies Should Do
Security Boulevard, Friday, October 16th, 2026
The French supermarket fridge attack shows AI-era breaches still enter through old doors: default creds and unpatched devices.
Overnight on October 11 and 12, attackers took control of internet-exposed refrigeration controllers from Danfoss, Copeland and Dixell at at least 350 French supermarkets, pushing fridges to 50C and causing fires and tens of millions of euros in losses.
Claroty had published the flaws two months earlier, including a 10.0 authentication bypass.
AI wasn't confirmed in the attack, but the author uses it to frame 2026, citing IBM's finding that one in four malicious breaches were AI-enabled at an average cost of $6 million and CrowdStrike's report of an 89% rise in AI-enabled adversaries.
Yet the entry points remain familiar, so the fundamentals of exposure, patching and credentials still matter most.
