Google Demonstrates Method to Cut Errors in Quantum Computing's Magic States
The Quantum Insider, Friday, October 16th, 2026
Google showed magic-state cultivation on its Willow chip, cutting T-state errors about 40-fold to 99.99% logical fidelity.
Google researchers published results in Science showing that magic-state cultivation works on the Willow processor, cutting errors in T-states roughly 40-fold and reaching 99.99% logical fidelity.
Magic states are consumed by certain operations in error-corrected machines, and some estimates suggest producing them could occupy up to 95% of a quantum computer's capacity.
The team also transferred prepared states between two forms of error correction.
The article calls the work an important but incremental step, since larger-scale tests and better ways to store and use the states are still needed.
