Data Governance in the Age of AI: Why Trust Is Becoming the New Infrastructure
DATAVERSITY, Wednesday, October 14th, 2026
AI agents lack the tacit knowledge humans use to navigate inconsistent enterprise data, so governance must become explicit infrastructure.
The author explains that enterprises rarely have one consistent version of revenue, customers or products, and experienced staff have historically compensated for these inconsistencies.
AI does not inherit that tacit knowledge, so answering "most profitable products last quarter" requires defined metrics, authoritative hierarchies, fiscal calendars, freshness and authorization.
Agentic requests make this harder, with inventory systems refreshing at different intervals and timestamps recorded in different time zones.
Giving AI more data can simply give it more ways to be wrong, so governance must be built into the technology itself.
