AI Is Taking on Entry-Level Engineering Work. Who Trains the Young Engineers?
DevOps.com, Wednesday, October 7th, 2026
As AI absorbs repetitive junior work and entry-level hiring falls, engineers risk losing the repetition that builds judgment.
An infrastructure engineer recalls how repetitive support desk work such as failed logins, permission errors and joiner-leaver access tasks taught pattern recognition and judgment, eventually resolving about 90% of incidents at first contact.
That repetition is getting scarcer, as 84% of developers use or plan to use AI tools per Stack Overflow and SignalFire's 2026 report finds entry-level hiring down about 65% at major tech firms and 76% at startups versus 2019.
The author argues organizations must deliberately preserve the training built into junior work as AI takes it over.
