Cloud Database Modernization: Capella vs. Atlas and DynamoDB
Couchbase, Friday, October 9th, 2026
Couchbase compares its Capella cloud database with MongoDB Atlas, Amazon DynamoDB and self-hosted options for enterprise NoSQL.
Couchbase sets out an eight-criteria framework for evaluating cloud NoSQL databases, covering data model flexibility, query capability, consistency, scaling, multi-region reach, AI readiness, pricing predictability and lock-in.
It positions Couchbase Capella against MongoDB Atlas by citing SQL++ as a superset of SQL, a memory-first architecture and independent service scaling, and claims more flexibility and predictable costs than Amazon DynamoDB while acknowledging DynamoDB's strength for stable, high-volume writes.
The post also argues that keeping vector search in the primary database avoids sync and consistency problems, and includes migration guidance from MongoDB.
