Even Now, ERP Implementations Can Make or Break CIOs

InformationWeek, Friday, October 2nd, 2026

Myles Suer says ERP remains career-defining for CIOs, and agentic AI makes data maturity and change management more important.

CIO analyst Myles Suer writes that ERP implementations remain the largest technology commitment most CIOs make and can end careers when they fail.

Dresner Advisory Services research shows more than 70% of surveyed companies run ERP, about 26% use it for BI and planning, and around 13% rely on their ERP vendor for AI strategy, while finance teams now prefer cloud ERP.

As vendors embed agentic AI, Suer argues that AI maturity cannot outpace data maturity, so CIOs should fix underlying data and process problems and manage change across people, process and technology.
