Tech Skills Gaps Are Stopping Projects in Their Tracks

CIO Dive, Thursday, October 1st, 2026

Pluralsight research finds skills gaps push most tech projects over budget, with many firms wasting $250,000 or more.

A Pluralsight report finds that most enterprises wasted $250,000 or more last year because workforce skills did not match project goals, and 84% of tech leaders say skills gaps cause projects to run over budget at least some of the time, with cloud, cybersecurity and AI projects most at risk.

More than three-quarters have seen employees earn certifications yet still be unable to apply the skills on the job.

Barriers to upskilling include lack of time, low engagement and weak leadership support, which Pluralsight says executives must address by assessing where gaps exist and investing accordingly.
