The Platform Dependency Nobody Puts in the Architecture Diagram: Trust
PlatformEngineering.com, Friday, October 2nd, 2026
Platforms can look healthy while workloads fail because identity and trust relationships drift, so trust needs reconciling too.
A PlatformEngineering.com feature describes a deployment where pipelines pass and pods are ready, yet another service fails with TLS errors because two workloads no longer agree on the trust relationship behind their identities.
Because internal developer platforms now create service identities, cloud roles, certificates, keys and policies, not just infrastructure, the author argues teams must distinguish infrastructure state, workload identity state and trust state, which can drift independently.
A trust-aware platform should declare intended trust relationships, observe runtime reality and reconcile drift in identities, credentials, issuers and policies.
