A New, No-Compromises Database Architecture for the Agentic Era

Google, Thursday, September 24th, 2026

Google Cloud argues scaling OLTP databases for AI agents needs a new architecture that avoids trading off scale, latency, or isolation.

This Google Cloud post surveys how prior database architectures, including Exadata's scale-out storage tier, Azure SQL Hyperscale's shared block servers, Aurora's distributed log storage, and object-storage-with-cache designs, each compromise at least one of scale, latency, or isolation.

It argues these trade-offs, acceptable for decades of enterprise OLTP workloads, are no longer tenable in the agentic era because dynamically generated agent workloads can't be vetted in advance and must be isolated from mission-critical systems. The piece sets up Google's announcement of a new AlloyDB architecture designed to avoid these compromises for agent-driven database access.
