Fedora 45 Beta Drags the Linux Console into the 21st Century
Red Hat, Wednesday, September 16th, 2026
The Register reports that Red Hat's Fedora 45 beta replaces the in-kernel console with userspace kmscon.
The Register covers the Fedora Linux 45 beta from Red Hat's community distribution, whose headline change is swapping the legacy in-kernel text console for kmscon, a userspace terminal emulator over a decade in development.
Kmscon uses the kernel's DRM and KMS interfaces, bringing smooth scaling, far better Unicode and international script handling, multiseat support and colour beyond the traditional 16.
The beta also ships the GNOME 51 release candidate, Linux kernel 7.2, stricter package signature enforcement and improved DNF5 upgrade handling, while Fedora Asahi Remix adds preliminary Apple M3 support.
