OpenAI Launches Managed Agents API to Simplify Enterprise AI Agent Development

OpenAI's new managed Agents API packages Codex's agent harness and infrastructure into a single API, now in public beta.
OpenAI introduced the Agents API, a managed service in public beta that brings the agent harness and infrastructure behind Codex to developers.
Instead of assembling runtimes, session management, tools, and execution environments, developers can define an agent's task, model, tools, and environment in a single API call.
Agents can run in an OpenAI-managed sandbox, on customers' own infrastructure, or via providers such as Cloudflare, Daytona, E2B, Modal, Oracle, and Vercel.
Analysts say it significantly reduces engineering work and time to production, though it raises fresh vendor lock-in concerns.
