Top Generative AI Trends to Watch in 2027

Analytics Insight, Thursday, September 10th, 2026

Agents, small and domain-specific models, multimodal AI, infrastructure costs and security will shape generative AI in 2027.

Generative AI in 2027 will shift from simple chat toward systems that reason, use tools and complete tasks, with AI agents and multi-agent workflows as the leading trend.

Small models built for complex logic and domain-specific models will gain ground; Gartner expects more than 50% of enterprise GenAI models to be industry- or function-specific by 2027, up from about 1% in 2023.

Multimodal AI will become the normal interface. Progress will also depend on chips, power and data centers, with Broadcom expecting about $115 billion in AI chip revenue in fiscal 2027, while inference cost, security and measurable ROI decide what scales.
