Introducing Amazon EBS Volume Clones Across AWS Accounts
AWS, Wednesday, September 9th, 2026
EBS Volume Clones now copy across accounts with optional re-encryption using KMS keys in the target account.
AWS extended EBS Volume Clones to support cross-account copying, letting teams create volume copies in another AWS account and optionally re-encrypt them with a KMS key belonging to that account.
Sharing is handled through AWS Resource Access Manager, with monitoring available via CloudTrail and EventBridge, and a one-time fee based on volume size.
Two constraints matter in practice: volumes encrypted with default AWS-managed keys cannot be shared, and copies must land in the same Availability Zone as the source. Useful for forensics, test data refresh and account migration workflows.
