From Disks to Digital: Modernizing Navy Software Delivery at RIMPAC
Leidos, Monday, August 31st, 2026
Leidos' Maritime Mission Edge replaced hand-carried tapes and CDs for Navy shipboard software updates at RIMPAC 2026.
Leidos recounts how senior solution architect Chris Johnson, with 45 years of Navy software delivery experience, saw a shift during Rim of the Pacific 2026, the world's largest international maritime exercise.
For most of that history new capabilities reached the fleet by hand, with engineers boarding ships carrying tapes, CDs or DVDs and installations taking anywhere from a day to several weeks.
That approach becomes harder to sustain as the fleet grows more connected and dependent on rapidly evolving digital capabilities. Maritime Mission Edge, the Leidos platform demonstrated at RIMPAC, provides a common secure environment for existing Navy applications so software can be deployed and managed without time-intensive shipboard installs.
