Intel's 256-Core Xeon 7 CPUs Are a Diamond in the Rough

A deep dive on Intel's delayed Diamond Rapids Xeon 7, a 256-core chiplet design aimed squarely at HPC.
Intel's Diamond Rapids Xeon 7 will ship with up to 256 performance cores, up from an original 192-core plan, after being delayed to 2027 for refinement, matching AMD's upcoming Venice Epyc core counts.
The modular design uses up to 22 chiplets: 16 core compute dies on Intel's 18A-P process, four base dies on Intel 3-T, and two fabric hub dies on Intel 3, delivering 16 DDR5 channels at 8,000 MT/s (12,800 with MRDIMMs) and 128 PCIe 6.0/CXL 3/UPI 3 lanes.
Notably, Diamond Rapids drops hyperthreading entirely and targets HPC rather than general enterprise use, with both Intel and AMD chips landing around 600W TDP, making price and value the key differentiators.
