Powering AI: Modular Data Centers Can Unlock Stranded Power

Dell, Wednesday, August 26th, 2026

Dell proposes modular data centers to tap stranded grid power, speeding AI deployment while reducing water use and local impact.

AI demand is accelerating while new data centers face growing community resistance and grid interconnection delays. Dell proposes modular data centers as a way to unlock stranded grid power, capacity that exists on the network but is not usable by conventional large-site builds.

The approach speeds deployment because modules can be sited and commissioned faster than greenfield construction.

Dell also cites reduced water use and easier community impact as advantages, addressing two of the most common objections raised in local planning fights. The argument is that siting flexibility, not just capacity, is now the constraint on bringing AI capacity online.
