Lakebase Postgres reimagines the OLTP database by decoupling compute and storage and treating the write-ahead log on scalable object storage such as S3 as the definitive source of truth.

Replacing heavy physical data duplication with lightweight pointers to log sequence numbers enables instant database branching, point-in-time restores and time-travel queries.

Databricks argues this suits agentic workloads particularly well, and that storing an immutable transaction history changes what the database can offer.
