Energy-Efficient Storage Architecture in the AI Era

TechTarget, Monday, August 17th, 2026

AI workloads make power the binding constraint, requiring energy-conscious storage design.

AI servers demand 60 kW or more per rack versus 5-10 kW for traditional data centers, making power a bottleneck. Storage consumes significant electricity and generates heat that requires cooling.

Intelligent tiering, placing hot data on SSDs and cold data on lower-power HDDs, reduces overall power consumption while maintaining performance for active datasets. The freed capacity can then serve AI workloads.
