IT Leaders Confident but Cooked When It Comes to Rogue AI Agents
CIO, Tuesday, July 21st, 2026
IT leaders overestimate their ability to contain AI agent malfunctions quickly even when they detect them.
A WanAware survey found 90% of IT and security leaders believe they can detect a malfunctioning AI agent, yet only 26% can trace downstream impacts within minutes.
More than 45% require hours to understand the full scope of an incident.
Experts warn that agents operating at machine speed can cause substantial damage through cascading effects long before detection. The recommended control is hard kill switches at the API layer rather than soft guardrails that a misbehaving agent can work around.
