Every Application Now Lives in an AI Ecosystem

Akamai Technologies, Thursday, July 23rd, 2026

Akamai argues nearly all apps now participate in AI ecosystems, making data movement the key architecture challenge.

Akamai contends that nearly all modern applications now participate in AI systems, whether by containing AI, connecting to AI services, feeding AI pipelines, or supporting AI infrastructure, pulling even legacy systems into AI workflows.

This demands orchestration of distributed compute, tiered storage, and low-latency networking to meet sub-500-millisecond targets.

As inference grows to roughly two-thirds of AI compute, data movement rather than storage becomes the critical constraint. The piece warns that traditional cloud pricing and egress fees should shape architecture decisions early.
