Best Practices For Cloud Data Security

Veeam, Monday, July 13th, 2026

A guide to the shared responsibility model, the top five cloud data threats, and six controls that reduce exposure.

Veeam reminds readers that under the shared responsibility model the customer, not the cloud provider, owns protection of their data.

It names five leading threats: misconfigured storage and permissions, insider error and unintended deletion, ransomware targeting backup repositories, API vulnerabilities, and silently failing backup jobs.

It prescribes six practices: classifying data, enforcing least privilege, encrypting data at rest, in transit, and in use, continuous monitoring with anomaly detection, immutable offsite backups following the 3-2-1-1-0 rule, and mapping controls to frameworks such as GDPR and HIPAA.

Guidance is broken out for public, private, and hybrid estates, arguing consistency across environments matters more than environment-specific tooling.
