TuxBot V3: Inside an IoT Botnet Framework With LLM-Assisted Development

Palo Alto Networks, Wednesday, July 15th, 2026

Unit 42 analyzes TuxBot v3, an IoT botnet framework whose authors appear to have used LLMs to speed up development.

Unit 42 published research on TuxBot v3, the latest evolution of an IoT botnet framework.

The analysis finds evidence that the malware's developers leaned on large language models to accelerate parts of the codebase, a signal of how AI tooling is lowering the effort required to build and iterate on malware.

Researchers detail the framework's architecture, its command-and-control behavior, and the changes from earlier versions. The post includes indicators of compromise and guidance for detecting infected IoT devices.
