The Total Cost of AI Ownership

Cohere, Wednesday, July 15th, 2026

Cohere argues token pricing hides the real cost of enterprise AI and that high-utilization workloads favor owned infrastructure.

Cohere examines the expenses enterprises routinely overlook when deploying AI, arguing that visible token pricing is only a fraction of true total cost of ownership once infrastructure, operations, security, and scaling are counted.

A single user request can fan out into multiple model calls, retrieval operations, and retries, multiplying token consumption well beyond initial projections.

The post cites research finding that 96% of organizations deploying generative AI and 92% using agentic AI encountered higher-than-expected costs.

For continuous, high-utilization workloads, owned infrastructure can be 8 to 18 times cheaper per token than API or cloud alternatives, though idle hardware wastes the investment.
