Amazon SQS Turns 20: Two Decades of Reliable Messaging at Scale

Amazon SQS marks 20 years as one of AWS's original three services, now handling AI agent coordination alongside classic decoupling.
Amazon SQS celebrated its 20th anniversary, having launched in July 2006 as one of the first three AWS services alongside EC2 and S3. The post revisits the core value proposition of decoupling producers from consumers to prevent cascading failures in distributed systems.
Over the last five years AWS raised FIFO queue throughput to 70,000 transactions per second, made encryption the default, and increased maximum message payloads to 1 MiB.
The fundamental use case is unchanged, but SQS now also underpins AI workloads by queueing inference requests and coordinating autonomous agents.
