Joel Klein, MD, senior vice president and CIO of University of Maryland Medical System, did not start his career in IT. He practiced as an emergency medicine physician, thriving in that chaotic and demanding environment. In the early days of electronic medical record systems, he started looking for ways to leverage data to understand performance in his hospital group. When it came time to upgrade the health system's EMR systems, he was tapped to lead that process.
