A Journey In Organizational Resilience: Crisis Management
SecurityIntelligence, October 4th, 2021

So far in this organizational resilience journey, we have focused mainly on the planning phase, or, as some call it, 'left of the boom'.

"For a moment, let's look at a 'right of the boom' (post-incident) theme: crisis management (CM), an important component of your cyber resilience planning.

A good CM plan will be part of a larger governance cybersecurity framework (a topic that we look at in the next piece) and has an emphasis on a vital attribute: communications. Carrying out a CM plan requires knowing roles and responsibilities, when to escalate, when to act, and what (and what not!) to say..."

IT Leadership: 5 Traits Of Truly Digital Leaders
The Enterprisers Project, October 8th, 2021

Running digital transformation efforts does not make you a digital leader. Here's what distinguishes leaders of successful digital businesses

"Every organization can make standalone digital investments, launch many digital transformation efforts, or even hire a team of digital executives to help them achieve digital nirvana. But actions made in isolation without fully adopting what it takes to become a digital business are destined to fail. The fact is, there's no silver bullet for building a digital organization, nor is there a clear deadline or desired end state.

To truly be digital - instead of just doing digital things - a business becomes a different version of itself by adopting a complete mindset and operational shift, preparing to adapt to change continuously. Becoming a digital business means accepting that change is the rule, not the exception - and that this constant state of change is the opportunity for them to stand out, not fall behind. And it takes an exceptional team. No single individual or IT leader can do it alone..."

Most CIOs Are Kept Awake At Night By Digital Transformation Challenges
ITProPortal, October 5th, 2021

Digital transformation is essential to post-Covid recovery

"The skills gap is keeping many Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) awake at night, as it presents a major roadblock to their digital transformation efforts, which are essential to post-Covid recovery.

This is according to a report from B2B banking service provider Banking Circle. Polling 600 CTOs and CIOs at banks, fintechs and PSPs across Europe, the company found that basically all of them (99 percent) suffer from skills gaps.

Even though almost two-thirds (63 percent) expect to see their payments IT teams increase in headcount in the next twelve months, a third (34 percent) aren't confident in their recruitment plans. What's more, a third of banks aren't confident their systems maintenance and infrastructure is future-proof, while a third of fintechs feel the same about API technology..."

The CIO's Guide To Managing Enterprise AI
ZDNet, October 4th, 2021

How should Chief Information Officers prepare to lead AI efforts in the enterprise? The author of a new book explains exactly what you need to know, on episode #706 of the CXOTalk series of conversations with people shaping our world.

"Today's CIOs must ensure that their organizations have an "AI-ready" infrastructure capable of supporting data and applications related to AI.

The challenge is not whether to embrace AI, but how to prepare the organization to adopt AI in a way that increases business value and reduces risk. CIOs must also consider how to establish a distinct set of enterprise capabilities around AI. All this requires CIOs to establish a holistic view of their enterprise infrastructure and how it should evolve to support current and future capabilities related to AI and data..."

Creating Your Team Of Security Intelligence Champions
Security Boulevard, October 4th, 2021

Throughout Recorded Future's blog series on 'The Threat Intelligence Handbook: Moving Toward a Security Intelligence Program,' we've explored how security intelligence empowers every team across a security organization to make better, faster decisions and amplify their impact. There's one final, yet critical, topic to examine: How to organize your core security intelligence team itself.

"Let's take a deep dive as we look at the final chapter 13, 'Your Threat Intelligence Journey.'

Michael Jordan once said, 'Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships' - and he's absolutely right.

There's no debate that machines process and categorize raw data exponentially faster than humans. On the flip side, humans are uniquely able to perform intuitive, big picture analysis that machines will never be able to achieve. That's why the most effective security intelligence programs combine the best of both worlds: a team of talented individuals with extensive experience and technical knowledge, bolstered by automated processes that eliminate manual, time-consuming tasks and empower people to focus on rewarding, high-impact work. When people and machines are paired, each works smarter - saving time and money, reducing human burnout, and improving security overall..."

Cybersecurity Awareness: The Basics Are The Foundation

It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month and the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) put out their 2021 #BeCyberSmart message kit... What do these mean for your business? Let's start off with the basics.

Cybersecurity Awareness Tips: Stop Throwing Good Money After Bad

More than ever, basic cyber hygiene is vital to protecting data. Here's why: the risk footprint has never been larger. Some reasons were not surprising: big data becoming harder to manage, more alerts bogging down and burning out incident responders, a blast of Internet of Things devices coming online and 5G deployments being a management issue of their own.

Cybersecurity Best Practices Lagging, Despite People Being Aware Of The Risks

Device Identity: The Overlooked Insider Threat
CSO Online, October 4th, 2021

Device/machine identity, especially in association with robotic process automation, can be a conduit for intentional and unintentional insider breaches

"Throughout National Insider Threat Awareness Month there has been no shortage of thoughts and ideas proffered on how to manage and mitigate insider risk that comes with having humans as part of the ecosystem. It's true, the human is both the strength and the weakness. They are called upon to mitigate the risk and ameliorate the actions of the malevolent or careless employee. Where discussion has been sparse is how machine/device identity plays a part in insider risk management..."

Cybercriminals constantly adopt newer techniques to target internet users. Read the article to know the four crucial ways to be CyberSmart

"The cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, with threat actors leveraging new hacking techniques to penetrate and exploit critical infrastructure. While organizations are worried about misconfigurations and poor security practices, human errors remain a major cause of cyberattacks and data breaches.

The Cost of Human Error

According to a study 'Psychology of Human Error' by Stanford University Professor Jeff Hancock and security firm Tessian, 88% of data breaches are caused by employees' mistakes. The study highlighted that nearly 43% said they're sure they have made a mistake at work that had security repercussions for themselves or their company. Several organizations claim that human error was the primary factor with a year-over-year increase in several security incidents. Almost 93% are concerned about human error causing accidental exposure of their cloud data..."

Periodic exercises of cybersecurity response and recovery plans ensure that organizations can minimize the effects of cyber attacks and protect the business and its continued success..."

SBN Why The Biggest Cyberattacks Happen Slowly
Security Boulevard, October 7th, 2021

We've all seen this scene in some movie or TV show: a hacker sits in a shadowy room busily typing on his keyboard.

"Suspenseful music plays in the background, the camera slowly pans around him in a slow movement, and within the span of a few clicks - voila! - our protagonist has deployed a cyberattack into the highly secured target he was trying to penetrate, 'I'm in' he says. This may make for great TV, but the reality of data breaches is not as exciting. The fact is that the biggest and most damaging attacks don't happen in minutes, they unfold over months. They aren't executed in a few clicks, but through a long process of exploration and exploitation.

According to The Cost of Data Breach Report by IBM, the average time to detect and contain a cyberattack is 280 days. That's over 9 months! And the cost of detecting and containing a breach caused by a malicious attack is even longer, 315 days..."

Piled on top of that is a growing wave of ransomware and software supply chain attacks..."

Top Security Risks To Watch For In Shifting To Hybrid Identity Management
ITProPortal, October 4th, 2021

Challenges of hybrid identity management

"It's easy to see why enterprises are gravitating toward a hybrid identity management model that promises the best of both worlds-a little bit in the cloud, and a little bit on-premises. In an Active Directory-centric environment, leveraging the cloud means integrating with Azure Active Directory. Azure Active Directory (AAD), after all, is designed with an eye toward SaaS applications, providing single sign-on and access control. As cloud adoption increases, the ability to manage both on-premises and cloud access is becoming a business necessity. Leveraging AAD alongside Active Directory (AD) helps make hybrid identity management a reality. As with anything in IT, however, the adage of look-before-you leap still applies..."

IT Hiring's Big Miss: How To Hire For Aptitude
The Enterprisers Project, October 7th, 2021

If you're struggling to fill key IT roles, consider who you're missing - and shift your recruitment strategy to focus more on aptitude. Use this expert advice to broaden your talent pool

"On the surface, it's easy to see IT hiring difficulties as a symptom of the pandemic. 2020 alone was an exercise in roller-coaster talent economics, and some recent reports indicate that hiring is slowing as fears of rising case numbers swell.

But to place the blame solely at the feet of the pandemic belies the fact that there's been a consistent widespread need for exceptional IT talent for years. As recently as 2019 organizations struggled to find the right people for their IT positions.

At issue is the hiring process itself. Understandably, many recruitment efforts have emphasized technical experience over soft skills, which are harder to measure but by no means less important. By narrowing their focus, potential employers have limited their talent pool and left no room for less traditional, more diverse applicants. What's missing, it seems, is a focus on aptitude - the unstated skillset that breeds innovation and drives new ways of thinking..."

Artificial Intelligence vs. Machine Learning 2021
Datamation, October 8th, 2021

Technology solution providers frequently list artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) products under one category of AI/ML.

The combination of these two tech trends has gained significant buzz in the business world, but AI and ML aren't the same thing: machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence.

Bartowsz Wojtowicz, a machine learning engineer at Netguru, a machine learning and digital transformation company, offered further distinction:

'AI describes a general concept of creating machines, simulating human cognitive capabilities - such as learning and problem solving,' Wojtowicz said. 'Whereas, machine learning is currently the most promising and most widely used application of AI, which allows computers to learn and improve based on experience.'

The Way We AI Now
InfoWorld, October 4th, 2021

Better data infrastructure has provided a big boost to AI's growth, but some things still require a human

"We've been overselling current capabilities of AI for years, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a bright future. That's perhaps why Stanford University researchers conceived of a 'One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence' (100 years!) back in 2016, with plans to update the report every five years through 2116, charting the progress of AI along the way. Five years after the inaugural report, the study authors recently released the second report.

The TL;DR? We've made 'remarkable progress' in just five years, on the back of ever-improving data infrastructure, yet we still fall 'far short of the field's founding aspiration of recreating full human-like intelligence in machines.' What we are discovering, however, is the importance of meshing human and machine to achieve better outcomes. Is it 'true' AI? Not as originally envisioned. But arguably it's better..."

Will The Cloud Eat Your AI?
TechRepublic, October 6th, 2021

Commentary: The big cloud providers have a lot going for them when it comes to artificial intelligence. Does that mean these cloud providers are the only game in town?

"Abandon all hope ye who enter here" was the inscription Dante read when passing through the gates of hell. Apparently, it's also true of anyone but the big cloud providers when it comes to artificial intelligence, according to an analysis by Bain & Company.

"The CSPs [cloud service providers] are best positioned because of the significant head start they have in using AI on a large scale," the report authors stated. Given that FirstMark investor Matt Turck recently called out how well startups have done in the shadows of the cloud giants, it's worth diving deeper into the strengths the clouds bring to AI. For one, lots of data..."

Darpa Program Aims To Build Quantum-Inspired Solvers
insideHPC, October 5th, 2021

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Quantum-Inspired Classical Computing (QuICC) program seeks to leverage lessons learned from benchmarking quantum algorithms to develop QI solvers for a range of complex DOD optimization problems, and demonstrate the feasibility of reducing the required computational energy by at least two orders of magnitude over existing techniques.

"Department of Defense (DOD) must solve many complex optimization problems to enable mission capabilities - from determining the most efficient way to distribute supplies to minimizing warfighters' exposure to hostile forces. Solving these intricate scenarios is difficult, largely owing to the limitations of existing computing resources. Today, many optimization problems are solved on conventional computers running both heuristic and approximate algorithms, extracting the best solutions allowed by the limited time and energy that is available..."

Are ERP-Centric Enterprises Being Left Behind?, October 6th, 2021

Many large enterprise companies are rife with departments that depend on customized ERP software applications

"These systems accommodate vital business tasks ranging from inventory management to ordering capabilities to accounting programs to CRM platforms-all of which were custom-built to fit the enterprise's specific needs and meet the KPIs of each unique organization. These applications tend to sustain grades, patches and reworks, sometimes resulting in multiple redesigns over the course of decades, and these often are not properly documented. To make matters worse, these ERP software systems also tend to be written in outdated programming languages such as ABAP for SAP and PL/SQL for Oracle, making them a challenge to update..."

The Business Continuity Plan Of The Future
Continuity Central, October 7th, 2021

"The business continuity plan of the past was usually predicated on the loss of the building and that only a certain percentage of the staff - usually 20-25 percent of the total - could be accommodated at a recovery site. The remaining 75-80 percent of staff were usually told to go home and wait for further instructions. CIO: Zero Trust Data Management (Oct 27th)
Wednesday, October 27th, 2021: 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Join CIO contributing editor Aaron Goldberg and subject-matter experts from Rubrik for a private, interactive, virtual roundtable.

As organizations struggle with the 'perimeter free' defensive posture of the future, the use of a zero-trust approach to various aspects of cyber-security has become a 'go-to' approach. This NIST standard is well suited for modern cyber-defense strategies. For many organizations the focus has been on access management, but more can be done. Extending zero-trust techniques to data management delivers many benefits and improves the security posture of the organization.

Deploying a zero-trust data management solution fits the current reality. For example, rather than depend on a 100% success rate for preventing intrusion, this new approach assumes that a breach or ransomware attack is likely and protects the data backups from it. This makes it possible to recover more quickly. A critical benefit from this approach is that it is now possible to determine the 'blast radius' or what data has been compromised. This allows SecOps or IT teams to protect data that hasn't been impacted and focus on only the compromised data. More importantly, zero-trust data management ensures that backups are protected and remain intact so they can be used to reduce the time necessary to resume operations.

CIO: Control API Sprawl and Cost: Governance, Visibility and Integrated Management (Oct 13th)
Wednesday, October 13th, 2021: 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Join us to network with IT executives on a governance structure that allows you to manage all API resources -- whatever your brand or location -- using one single pane of glass

Many organizations have API initiatives that link workflows and applications throughout their business ecosystems. The problem for many is that there are too many API solutions in use. The complexity, duplication, and cost of management and security is threatening to overwhelm IT leaders. That's why many are turning to integrated API governance solutions to bring all systems, processes, and APIs together with one unified, management approach.

This helps companies build APIs faster, identify which APIs to reuse, organize access to API internally and externally via a marketplace, monetize APIs, and shorten system onboarding times. Instead, these companies focus on API growth consumption, rather than duplicating efforts. Tuesday, October 19th, 2021: 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Join us to learn and network with IT executives on strategies for implementing a consistent management workflow to control technology sprawl.

Virtualization...containerization...server automation...hyper-converged infrastructures. Over the past 18 months, each of these concepts has seen accelerated adoption across all industries. In so doing, many organizations have witnessed a spike in complexity and fragmentation, prompting many to explore how to overcome inconsistency and complexity while dealing with application sprawl and siloed data across cloud providers. Organizations find their use of multiple clouds was born out of decentralized IT practices, making it challenging for IT Ops teams to untangle the complexity.

Spending on hybrid, multi-cloud infrastructure technologies is now standard across all types of retailers, even though most retail budgets were stressed in 2020. Indeed, many retailers are accelerating their digital transformation efforts through current and planned investments in cloud and mobile-based inventory management, self-checkout, fulfillment, demand forecasting, price, and promo optimization, among other initiatives. These trends raise a couple of crucial questions:

What drives these decisions, and to what extent are business-centric considerations at the center of technology modernization initiatives? More importantly, how can IT operations (IT Ops) be optimized to support these business transformation activities?

Cisco Launches First Global Hybrid Work Index: Key Findings Reveal Hybrid Work Is Powered By Mobile And AI, Talent Sits Everywhere
Cisco News, October 7th, 2021

Security remains paramount: hybrid workforce was targeted with more than 100 million email threats daily in September 2021 alone

Cisco unveiled its first Hybrid Work Index (HWI) based on millions of aggregated and anonymous customer datapoints. The Index, which will be updated quarterly, examines how people's habits and technology interactions have permanently reshaped work a year and a half into the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings show hybrid workers expect greater flexibility, accessibility and security, while businesses grapple with meeting these increased technology demands.

'We're truly at a unique time, with the ability to redefine work,' said Chuck Robbins, Chair and CEO, Cisco. 'All employees around the world want a workplace that enables them to do their best, and it is our responsibility as business leaders to learn how best to support and enable our employees, however and wherever they work.'

Hybrid Work: Revolution Or Evolution?
Cisco News, October 7th, 2021

We're in the midst of a fundamental change rather than gradual change. It's a revolution, not evolution

"Not too long ago, 'hybrid work' was seen as a luxury, a benefit for those who could manage their work from home every now and again. Forward thinking? Yes. Ubiquitous? No. But throw in a pandemic-induced, grand experiment of work-from-home, and suddenly hybrid work went from nice-to-have to must-have.

Since the advent of hybrid work isn't exactly new, is this shift from nice-to-have to must-have a revolution or evolution? I believe we're in the midst of a fundamental change rather than gradual change. It's a revolution, not evolution. And the revolutionary shift to hybrid work is profound for these reasons..."

Leave Lost PC Security Worries Behind With HP Wolf Protect And Trace Service
HP News, October 7th, 2021

With the hybrid workforce here to stay for many companies, employees are working from more diverse locations than ever before. This makes it critical for IT to have the right security in place to protect employee devices and sensitive company data.

"The true risk with a lost or stolen PC isn't just the hardware cost and lost productivity. The average cost of data breach from a lost or stolen laptop has surpassed $4 million globally and can top over $9 million in the US.1 Malicious actors can wreak havoc on your corporate network and gain access to valuable company IP faster than it typically takes an organization to identify and contain a breach, which is over nine and a half months.

Hybrid work environments will only continue to exacerbate this threat. With the reality of only 1 in 3 remote workers having a dedicated home office space,3 and the expanded availability of public internet access expected over the next four years, a recent HP Wolf Security study found that 81% of IT managers feel that the flexibility allowed by remote work significantly increases the threat of corporate network breaches.5 But what if your IT team had a way to stop a breach on a missing device in its tracks, or prevent it before it even had a chance to begin?..."

When It Comes To Cybersecurity, There Is Strength In Partners
IBM News, October 7th, 2021

"Businesses and government share a collective responsibility to collaborate on preventing cyberattacks that could have a devastating impact or prompt national or global crises."

"There is an old saying with a timeless instruction: "If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together." As Cybersecurity Awareness Month kicks into high gear, it's critical to remember the key role that public / private partnership and collaboration will play in the security of our critical infrastructure.

As the former chief information officer (CIO) for the Department of Defense (DoD), I've thought a lot about the unique benefits that focused collaboration can bring. During my tenure, I collaborated with my team and across the armed forces to create a unified information management and technology vision for the Department. But technology was the easy part. When it came to cybersecurity, I knew that the latest technologies weren't the only answer. The constantly changing, interconnected and ubiquitous nature of the cybersecurity challenge also requires a change in culture..."

Kids and families are spending more time online than ever before. The internet can be a truly valuable resource for kids, as it provides educational material, fun games, and ways to connect with friends.

"However, it can also be a playground for things like cyberbullying, malicious content, and bad actors who seek to prey on kids and their families for things such as identity theft, criminal activity, and more.

So just like wearing bike helmets and seatbelts, we need to practice good cyber hygiene skills when we're online to ensure we stay protected..."

Taking A Platform Approach To Zero Trust
Fortinet News, October 7th, 2021

When it comes to security and networking, the two biggest challenges are complexity and visibility

"Many organizations have countless solutions that they are trying to get to play nice with one another. And it doesn't always work out very well. So when leadership (or the President of the United States) says you need to implement a zero trust architecture, many might grown with concerns. And if you're using incompatible products from multiple vendors that have multiple dashboards and challenging integrations, you can easily end up with a deployment so complex that it doesn't work with the systems you already have. In this scenario, that collective groan is quite justified.

As you embark on your zero trust journey, taking a platform approach and choosing solutions that are integrated by design will be much easier to deploy, configure, and maintain. That's why the Fortinet Security Fabric exists. Not only does it make it possible for Fortinet products to work together, it's an open ecosystem that includes a wide variety of vendors. This allows you to build one broad, integrated, and automated platform that includes a mixture of solutions that enable your network to easily change and expand alongside your business..."

The War On Cybercrime And Ransomware: Are You Ready?
Fortinet News, October 4th, 2021

Not all heroes wear capes. Many work quietly and diligently behind the scenes, amassing evidence and uncovering clues until there's enough to go on to take the enemy down.

"Just like detective work, cybercrime defenders use similar tactics to chase cybercriminals, getting into their minds and following their actions to beat them at their own game.

We are seeing an increase in effective and destructive cyberattacks affecting thousands of organizations in a single incident creating an important inflection point for the war on cybercrime. In the case of ransomware, some operators are shifting their strategy away from email-initiated payloads to focusing on gaining and selling initial access into corporate networks further showing the continued evolution of Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) fueling cybercrime. This means even ransomware is about much more than just ransom, it can also be about access. In fact, recent data from Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs shows that the average weekly ransomware activity in June 2021 was more than 10x higher than one year ago. This shows us a consistent and overall significant increase over a one-year period. According to Fortinet's State of Ransomware survey, it has become the top threat concern for many organizations today..."

The Future Of Connected Cloud Architecture
Red Hat News, October 7th, 2021

The pandemic has shown us how fragile our infrastructure services and resilience can be, when faced with a loss of access to datacenter resources, either by way of physical or remote access through reliance on outsourced providers

"That's why at the height of the pandemic last year, we witnessed a significant rethink about the pace at which we move applications and data to the cloud. A major health insurer in Australia whom I spoke to recently said they have moved more data to the cloud than ever before in order to have the capabilities for a remote and diverse team to be able to work on solving digital business use cases.

We've also arrived at a juncture where cloud-centric technologies are the foundation for all infrastructure, be it from a cloud provider, or in an in-house infrastructure refresh or modernization program. Thanks to open source technologies, there is much more confidence in the ability to design portable and deployable workloads into modern infrastructure at higher densities, configurations and at the speed of software code...."

Citrix News, October 7th, 2021

The last several years have brought about an explosion in remote work, with millions of people around the world accessing their data and apps from their home office or any number of non-traditional workplaces

"Organizations depend on the productivity of the remote workforce but providing a secure and a productive work environment is an ongoing challenge. Hackers and other bad actors are using mechanisms like exploiting vulnerabilities of appliance-based solutions or embedding malware content in whitelist applications or using bots to launch increasingly insidious attacks. Devastating corporate or governmental security breaches, ransomware attacks, and attacks on critical infrastructure often start with a common theme: an attack against individual remote workers, their devices, or their applications..."

Traditional enterprise architecture and security models aren't suited to meet the needs of today's hybrid workforce and the accompanying complex application-security requirements

"With the shift to SaaS, more data and business apps are residing on the cloud, while many enterprise apps remain inside the datacenter.

Unfortunately, this makes these complex environments challenging to secure and manage. On top of that, the growth of hybrid work and the expanded use of different device types have increased the attack surface for organizations..."

"By 2024, at least 40% of all remote access usage will be served predominantly by zero trust network access (ZTNA), up from less than 5% at the end of 2020." -Gartner

Previewing Citrix Launchpad: Work
Citrix News, October 5th, 2021

Over the last 18 months, we've seen companies adapt heroically and with great success to unprecedented change.

"They've moved quickly to support distributed work with cloud-based solutions that enable productivity for all work types - employees, contractors, gig workers, and others.

But this acceleration in the adoption of new work models has, in many ways, overloaded people. It has introduced complexity that can affect productivity and negate the gains that come with being more secure, more flexible, and more agile as an organization..."
